Now, after the hubbub of Derby has passed, we can finally reveal Col. Katie’s secret Kentucky Derby recipe for her now legendary Hillbilly Mint Juleps.
A quick word before we begin — one of our most faithful and respected readers, Mumblelard, speculated that a Hillybilly Mint Julep might resemble an altogether different type of cocktail. His vision was so irresistable I have adapted here with a few modifications as a foreword, and rechristened it a Monsanto Julep.
2 1/2 oz. Old Grandad bourbon (or any brand with a screwtop)
2 tsp tap water
1 tsp creme de menthe (be sure to pick a brand without those fruity accent marks over the “e” on the label)
1 tsp Karo corn syrup
2 sticks of Wrigley’s Spearmint chewing gumMix creme de menthe, Karo syrup and water in a Kentucky Wildcats 1996 NCAA Champions plastic cup. Fill the glass with crushed ice and add bourbon. Top with more ice and garnish with Wrigley’s. Serve with a straw.
Boy howdy!
Anyway, enough of that; onto the real thing. Presented here for the first time, the Hillbilly Mint Julep:
Katie begins with making the concentrated mint syrup:
1 medium sized bunch of mint leaves, roughly chopped
18 oz cold water
3 tbs honey (preferably local)
4 teabags mint tea
4 oz agave nectar
Boil all ingredients except teabags and nectar in large teapot until reduced by half.
Remove pot from heat, add teabags, let steep. Add agave nectar and sti.r
Pour into container and chill.
Now, for the main portion:
2 oz concentrated mint syrup
4 oz Kentucky straight bourbon (it looks like Katie used Television brand, which is our personal favorite — remember, you may not be an expert on bourbon, but you can play one…on Television)
8 oz Ale-8-1
8-10 mint leaves
ice
sprig of mint for garnish
In two chilled 12 oz tumblers muddle mint leaves, add crushed ice.
In a large shaker, combine the syrup, bourbon, Ale-8-1 and several cubes of ice by shaking liberally.
Pour into tumblers, add mint sprigs and get drunk [Katie’s specific instructions].
Makes two 12 oz servings.
And ladies and gentelmen, that is the Hillbilly Mint Julep!
