The logo of Virginia’s Roanoke Valley Rebels of the Eastern Hockey League, circa 1971. Perhaps the only example in the entire history of graphic design where the Canadian maple leaf and the Stars and Bars have been combined. What on earth do you think all the French-Canadians that played for the Rebels made of it?
The thought of long-haired, mustachioed French-speaking Quebec natives in the early 1970s, during the heyday of the FLQ, wearing Confederate Maple Leaf uniforms in the rural American south is almost too weird to contemplate.
